You have displayed incredible dedication to the game of golf and to the North Florida PGA Section in general. What is it that motivates you to show such dedication and devotion to the game?
I thoroughly enjoy being around the game, our guests, and so many great golf Professionals in our Section. I feel extremely blessed to be in an industry that gives me all the challenges and happiness I could want each and every day. My dedication comes from my upbringing in golf. Practicing, playing, striving to do a good job, being mentored by other Professionals, all have afforded me this great opportunity of being a golf Professional. All of these little things added up to building my character on and off the golf course and being dedicated to a sport I love.
Who is it that introduced you to the game and what is the story behind that?
I was seven years old, sitting on the floor playing with my Tonka trucks while my father was switching through the channels. He stopped at golf for a moment, and I quickly saw the green grass, trees, and white sand on TV with someone playing golf. Dad then changed the channel. I got him to change it back and I stopped playing with my trucks so that he and I could watch the end of the tournament. The very next week, we went to the local sporting goods store, bought a set of junior clubs for me and he bought a set for him, and away we went to a driving range. The course 3 miles down the road, Skyland Golf Course, was kind enough to let me have a weekend after 4 pm pass to play. So dad and I started our golf journey together and have been playing regularly ever since.
We believe that PGA Members are the experts in the game and business of golf. Our Members are passionate about playing, learning, serving, and leading. Out of these 4 passion areas, which is most important to you and why?
Not to sound like a copout, but all four are equally important to me. I played a lot of junior golf growing up and professional events, which has fueled my passion for competition and leisurely golf. Anyone that might see me on social media, sees that I love to play golf (and yes, I work). Learning has been extremely important to me. I found myself quickly in a position that I wasn’t quite ready for as a General Manager of a facility back in Ohio. I needed to learn, and learn quickly. Therefore, I have always thought that education for me and our membership kept us as highly important people at our facilities. Serving and Leading go hand and hand for me. I serve the membership by leading our West Central Chapter. Why? Because I have been given tremendous opportunities in my career because of golf and people. This is my opportunity to give back and assist our golf professionals in reaching some of their goals: career, education, playing opportunities, or just friendship.
What is something that your fellow PGA Members might not know about you?
I think I’m pretty much an open book. But I’m sure there are a lot of things people don’t know about me. But to keep this one from being a public embarrassment with some great stories, I’ll stick with a golf goal. I am currently trying to play the top 100 golf courses in The United States and have knocked out about 50 of them already. I have scratched off 3 out of the top 5. But if you want to hear some of those great stories, give me a call!
If your golf ball could speak, what would it say to you or about you?
“Seriously, ever think about hitting a fade? This hook thing you have going on is getting old!”
