Section Overview

On September 1, 1979, the PGA of America Board of Directors approved the division of the Florida Section, and the North Florida Section was formed. It included all of Florida east of the Apalachicola River and north of the southern boundaries of Sarasota, Desoto, Polk, Osceola and Brevard counties. There were three chapters - Northern, East Central and West Central serving approximately 600 members and apprentices, and one full time Executive Secretary, Millie Mix. The officers were:

President: Mike O'Sullivan, Riviera Country Club, Ormond Beach
Secretary:  Lew Smither, Spruce Creek Country Club, New Smyrna Beach
Treasurer:  Jim Duval, Winewood Country Club, Tallahassee

In 1983 the position of Executive Director was created to take some of the workload off the officers, develop a stronger administrative organization, solicit sponsors for tournaments and other programs and oversee the activities of the Section in general. Jerry Porter of Deltona was retained for this position. In 1984 Kent Kahre, PGA member, was hired to serve the membership as full time Tournament Director. In addition to these two positions, the staff consists of three full time secretaries in the Daytona headquarters and Rick Hendershot, PGA member, as Winter Tour Director.

In 1985 after experiencing extremely rapid growth, the Section responded to a request from its members in the Sarasota/Bradenton area and created a fourth chapter, the Southwestern. "Cut" from the West Central, the boundaries are all of Sarasota, Desoto, Hardee and Manatee counties
